Accessing PBS Benefits
In order to avail Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), possession of a Medicare card along with the Health Care Card is mandatory.
Prescription Form and Cost for PBS
Prescription forms for the PBS, furnished by Services Australia, include designated spaces for specifying a patient’s eligibility status. This critical information entails:
- Placing a cross (x) in the designated box to indicate the level of patient contribution.
- Providing the complete Medicare number, or alternatively, the complete Veteran file number present on the card.
- If applicable, the complete concession number found on the health care card.
Within the framework of the PBS, the maximum cost for a pharmaceutical benefit item dispensed at a pharmacy is set at $30.00 for general patients and a reduced rate of $7.30 for individuals holding a health care card. This cost may be subject to additional fees such as special patient contributions, brand premiums, or therapeutic group premiums where applicable. Importantly, the supply of a pharmaceutical benefit or a Repatriation pharmaceutical benefit to a patient is exempt from the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
